About USGS Monterey Bay Science

United States Geological Survey

USGS Monterey Bay Science highlights research by the U.S. Geological Survey in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and coastal watersheds of central California. This project, led by the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program, provides timely information for research, decision-making, and education.

USGS Monterey Bay Science supports:

  • Data access: Creating new scientific knowledge by synthesizing existing data and information.

  • Decision-making: Making sound decisions based on the best available science.

  • Education: Helping students, educators, and the public learn more about the Monterey Bay area and the science behind the data.

By providing information and tools to support these three primary functions, USGS Monterey Bay Science will address the needs of scientists, advocacy groups, public-policy decision-makers, educators, and concerned citizens.

More than just a website, USGS Monterey Bay Science will provide maps, fact-sheets, pamphlets, and posters, and its leaders will organize presentations and symposiums.

USGS Monterey Bay Science is a pilot project for the Coastal and Marine Knowledge Bank, a USGS initiative to organize and present interdisciplinary scientific information on a national scale.
