Map Server (opens in a new window)
Interactive mapping tool that contains data layers for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the central California watershed, collected by the U.S. Geological Survey. Available data layers include:
- Basemaps
- Basemap data layers include coastline, National Marine Sanctuary boundaries, state boundaries, federal lands, water features, place names, and geographic graticules.
- Backscatter - Sidescan Sonar Imagery
- Sidescan sonar imaging provides high-resolution images of the sea floor by recording the intensity of sound backscattered off the sea floor. Data layers include a composite image of Monterey Bay.
- Bathymetry - Contours
- Bathymetric data files for Central California and Monterey Bay.
- Bathymetry/Topography Images
- Shaded relief images of on-shore elevation and off-shore bathymetry of Central California, the Monterey Bay area, Monterey Bay, and Monterey Canyon.
- Boundaries
- Boundary data layers include coastline, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries boundaries and the adjacent major watersheds for Central California, extent of the combined backscatter mosaics completed by the USGS for the Monterey Bay area, and the Pacific83 - Submerged Lands Act (SLA) Boundary for the U.S. Pacific West Coast.
- Coastal
- Coastal data layers include the Coastal Vulnerability Index and point locations from which digital photographs of the California coastline were taken.
- Earthquakes
- Earthquake data layers include relocated earthquake hypocenters, the connecting vector for each pair of old and new earthquake hypocenters, and the location of magnitude 2.5 and greater earthquakes from 1975 - 2000.
- Geology
- Overview of the regional tectonics. Layers include seafloor rocks and sediment, Holocene sediment thickness, and tectonic structure.
- Navigation
- Location data in the form of navigation tracklines, one-minute time fixes (where available) and instrument locations are provided for each of the cruises during which data were collected.
- Sidescan Sonar Mosaic
- Composite mosaic of the GLORIA sidescan sonar mosaics that fall within the Monterey Bay region map view.
- Surficial Sediments
- The sediment sample data layers in the GIS consist of locations with a related database table for each of the different analyses conducted on the samples, e.g., grain size, organic carbon content, sediment accumulation rates, and foraminifer abundance (Edwards and others, 2001).
Map Server Layers Available Soon:
- Lidar
- 0.00005-degree (approximately 5-m) gridded LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) elevation data.
- Digital Raster Graphics
- 0.000015-degree (approximately 1.5-meter) resolution Digital Raster Graphics data in 7.5-minute quadrangles.
- Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangles
- 1-meter resolution digital orthophoto quarter quadrangles.
